The Moluccan Cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) is endemic to the south Moluccas of Indonesia, is vulnerable in the wild and is listed under CITES Appendix I. It is a very large cockatoo at 600 to 950 grams, lives fifty to seventy years, and holds a documented record as one of the loudest birds on earth, with calls measured at around 129 decibels at close range. That number is not a curiosity; it is the single most important fact for anyone considering one. The second most important fact is emotional. Moluccans form an attachment to their keeper of an intensity that has no parallel among companion animals; in the wild they remain paired for life and are rarely alone. In a home with normal working hours, that need is routinely unmet, and the result is the breed's notorious profile: screaming that neighbours can hear streets away, self-mutilating feather destruction, and separation behaviour that no amount of training resolves. Rescue organisations receive more Moluccans relative to their numbers than almost any other parrot, usually surrendered between five and ten years old. Kept well, they need an aviary-scale enclosure, four or more hours of direct interaction daily, constant destructible foraging work, and a keeper who is home. Feed pellets with vegetables and greens and few nuts, since cockatoos gain weight and develop fatty liver disease easily. They produce heavy powder down, so ventilation and air filtration protect both bird and owner. Do not acquire one as a first parrot, and if one needs a home, go through a rescue that will support you.
