Ackie monitors are small but active dwarf monitors that need more space and heat than their size suggests: an enclosure of at least 1.2×0.6 m with 30–50 cm of deep, slightly moist substrate for burrowing, a very hot basking surface of 50–60°C from a cluster of bulbs, a cool end, and strong UVB. The intense basking spot fuels their fast metabolism and constant activity. Feed a mostly insectivorous diet — crickets, roaches, mealworms and the occasional lean whole prey or egg — dusted with calcium, offered often to growing animals and a few times a week to adults. They are enthusiastic hunters, so scatter-feeding encourages natural foraging, but watch portions since even ackies can grow obese. These are bright, food-motivated lizards that tame readily and interact eagerly, making them a favourite first monitor; handle regularly but gently, support the body, and expect a busy, curious animal that explores everything. Keep the basking spot genuinely hot and the substrate deep to prevent metabolic bone disease, respiratory infection and shedding problems, and control feeding to avoid obesity.
