The Quaker, or monk parakeet, is a clever, sociable chatterbox and a superb talker, unique among parrots for its instinct to build elaborate stick nests. Before anything else, check your local law: because escaped Quakers form hardy feral colonies that damage crops and infrastructure, they are illegal or restricted in several regions and US states. Where allowed, they make engaging pets that need a roomy cage, out-of-cage time, and lots of foraging and chewable material to satisfy that building drive. Diet is mostly pellets and vegetables; Quakers are prone to fatty liver and obesity, so keep seed and fatty treats limited. They can be territorial around their cage, so consistent handling keeps them friendly. Watch for feather plucking — the breed is prone to a self-destructive 'Quaker mutilation syndrome' driven by boredom and stress — along with obesity, fatty liver and respiratory disease. Their lungs are sensitive to non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke, which are lethal. Give a Quaker mental stimulation, nesting-style foraging outlets, a lean diet and daily interaction, and it will be a talkative, entertaining companion for twenty to thirty years.
