Bred on the harsh, treeless Shetland Isles to haul peat and work mines, the Shetland is tiny (under ~107 cm) but astonishingly strong for its size, with a dense double coat, short legs and an intelligent, bold, sometimes wilful character. That cleverness makes them wonderful characters and capable children's driving and lead-rein ponies — but also crafty escape artists who will out-think a lazy handler. They need firm, consistent, kind training from the ground up: a spoiled Shetland learns bad habits fast and its small size hides real power. Despite their toughness they enjoy company and daily activity, and they make excellent companions, therapy animals and first ponies when properly schooled. The thick coat needs regular grooming, especially in the moult, and clipping may be needed for sweaty work. Their great weakness is metabolism: Shetlands are extreme easy keepers, dangerously prone to obesity, laminitis and Equine Metabolic Syndrome on rich grass, so strictly limited grazing (often a track or muzzle) is essential. Keep up hoof trimming, dental floating and vaccination, and watch weight year-round.
