The Siberian Husky is a friendly, energetic, endlessly athletic sled dog, and its charm comes bundled with a set of demanding traits that catch many owners off guard. Bred to run for hours pulling loads across the Arctic, it needs a great deal of daily exercise, and being sociable with everyone it makes a hopeless guard dog. Two things define living with a Husky: it is a notorious escape artist that will dig under, climb over or bolt through any gap, so a secure fenced yard and a leash in open areas are non-negotiable; and it has a strong prey drive and independent, stubborn streak, so training takes patience and recall can never be fully trusted off-lead. The thick double coat is self-cleaning and odour-free but sheds dramatically twice a year, needing frequent brushing during the 'blow'. Health-wise Huskies are relatively hardy, but buy from a breeder who screens eyes and hips, since the breed is prone to eye conditions (cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, corneal problems) and can have hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism. Give a Husky serious exercise, secure containment, patient training and company (it hates being alone), and it will be a beautiful, spirited companion for twelve to fourteen years.
