The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a cheerful, friendly, people-loving Irish farm dog, softer in temperament than most terriers though it keeps a terrier's energy and confidence. Famous for the exuberant, jumping 'Wheaten greetin', it is playful, affectionate and devoted, and it thrives on being an involved part of the family. It needs daily exercise and mental stimulation plus consistent, positive training and early socialisation to manage its bounce and enthusiasm. The silky, wavy, single coat is low-shedding (which some allergy sufferers appreciate) but high-maintenance: it mats easily and needs daily brushing plus regular trimming. Health is the crucial consideration with this breed. Wheatens are prone to two serious protein-losing diseases — protein-losing nephropathy (affecting the kidneys) and protein-losing enteropathy (affecting the gut) — that can be life-threatening, so it is essential to buy from a breeder who health-tests for these and to have your vet monitor kidney values and blood protein over the dog's life. Also watch for Addison's disease, allergies and hip dysplasia. Choose a tested line, keep up grooming and monitoring, and a Wheaten will be a joyful, devoted companion for twelve to fourteen years.
