The Welsh Terrier is an old Welsh working breed used to hunt fox, badger and otter, and it looks like a scaled-down Airedale in the same black-and-tan wire coat. Among terriers it has a reputation for being one of the more even-tempered: still bold, busy and completely fearless, but less scrappy with other dogs and more tolerant than a Scottish or Jack Russell Terrier. It is a family dog that suits an active household. Welsh Terriers are playful, funny and affectionate, generally good with children who are old enough to be sensible, and confident rather than nervous. They also have a full terrier operating system: strong prey drive, enthusiasm for digging, a habit of announcing visitors, and a firm belief that their own idea is better than yours. Training needs to be short, interesting and reward-based, and recall is unreliable near small animals, so a secure garden is essential. The harsh wire coat sheds little and needs brushing weekly plus hand-stripping two or three times a year to keep colour and texture; clipping softens it. Expect around an hour of daily exercise plus games and puzzles. The breed is generally robust, but buy from a breeder who screens eyes, since primary lens luxation and glaucoma occur, and be aware of skin allergies, epilepsy and hypothyroidism in some lines. With that, twelve to fifteen active years is the norm.
