The veiled chameleon is a spectacular but genuinely advanced pet, best thought of as living artwork to observe rather than handle — they are solitary and easily stressed, and handling is something they tolerate at best. Each needs its own tall, well-ventilated screen enclosure with live plants and branches to climb, strong UVB, a basking gradient, and carefully maintained humidity. Crucially, chameleons will not drink from a standing bowl; they lick moving droplets, so they need a dripper or several daily mistings. Diet is gut-loaded insects dusted with calcium and vitamin D3, and the colour changes people love are communication and thermoregulation signals, not camouflage — a consistently dark, stressed chameleon is telling you something is wrong. A vital point for females: they can produce eggs even without a male, so a laying female must have a deep substrate bin to dig in, or she risks fatal egg binding, and needs extra calcium. Watch closely for metabolic bone disease, dehydration, respiratory infection and stuck shed. With a lifespan of only around five to eight years and exacting needs, the veiled chameleon rewards precise, patient keeping rather than beginners.
