The American Shorthair descends from hardy working cats and has been bred into one of the most balanced, low-maintenance family cats around. Easygoing and adaptable, it is playful enough to enjoy a game but calm enough to relax on its own, and it is famously patient with children and tolerant of dogs, making it a natural fit for a busy household. Moderate in energy, it still needs daily play and mental stimulation to stay trim, since the breed puts on weight readily when it turns into a couch cat. The short, dense coat is very easy — a weekly brush, stepped up during seasonal sheds, is all it asks. This is a robust, long-lived breed, but responsible breeders still screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a specific form is recognised in the breed) and polycystic kidney disease. Keep the cat lean with measured meals and play, maintain good dental hygiene, ensure plenty of fresh water, and keep up annual check-ups to enjoy a healthy companion well into its teens.
