The Domestic Shorthair is not a single breed but the wonderfully varied product of generations of natural mixing, and that genetic diversity gives most 'moggies' robust health and an endless range of looks and personalities. They suit almost any home — apartment or house, single owner or busy family — and tend to be adaptable, resilient and refreshingly low-drama. Because temperament varies so widely, spend time with a cat before adopting: some are devoted lap cats, others aloof hunters happiest on a high perch. All of them stay healthier and calmer with daily interactive play, a sturdy scratching post, window views and a little vertical space to burn energy and head off boredom. The short coat needs only a weekly brush and otherwise washes and goes. The real risks are lifestyle ones — keep portions measured to prevent obesity, offer dental treats or brushing against periodontal disease, feed enough moisture to protect the urinary tract, and keep vaccinations and yearly check-ups on schedule.
