The eclectus is a calm, gentle, intelligent parrot, famous for being so strikingly sexually dimorphic — brilliant green males and deep red-and-blue females — that the two were once thought to be different species. Mellow and thoughtful rather than boisterous, it makes a wonderful companion for a calm household, needing a roomy cage, daily interaction, and out-of-cage time with foraging and gentle enrichment over its 30–50 year life. Diet is where the eclectus stands apart from every other parrot, and getting it right is the single most important thing. It has an unusually long digestive tract built for a high-fibre, fruit-and-vegetable-rich tropical diet, and it is highly sensitive to artificial colours, preservatives and over-supplementation. Too many synthetic vitamins or additives famously trigger 'toe-tapping' and 'wing-flipping' — involuntary muscle spasms — so a natural whole-food diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and simple low-additive pellets is essential. Beyond diet, watch for feather plucking, obesity and respiratory or fungal disease, and keep the air free of the non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke that are lethal to birds. Feed it as the fibre-hungry specialist it is, give it a calm environment and companionship, and an eclectus is a serene, long-lived and beautiful companion.
