The European Shorthair is the standardised descendant of the everyday cats that have hunted European barns and homes for two thousand years. Centuries of natural selection gave it a hardy constitution, a level temperament and a friendly, undemanding personality that fits almost any household. Moderately active and self-sufficient, it enjoys a good play session and a hunting game but is equally happy to entertain itself. It bonds warmly with its family yet keeps an independent streak, making it a great match for owners who want affection without constant neediness. Grooming could not be simpler: a weekly brush keeps the dense short coat gleaming. With no strong breed-specific diseases, the European Shorthair is famously long-lived; the practical priorities are avoiding obesity, maintaining dental health and providing fresh water and a clean litter box to support the urinary tract.
