The Oriental Shorthair is essentially a Siamese in every coat colour and pattern imaginable, and it shares that breed's soul completely: loud, chatty, brilliantly intelligent and utterly devoted to its person. It wants to be involved in everything you do and thrives on conversation and companionship, which also makes it the wrong cat to leave home alone for long days — an Oriental left lonely becomes anxious and vocal, so a second cat or a home that is often occupied suits it best. This is a busy, athletic breed that needs real enrichment: puzzle feeders, fetch, tall perches, leash walks and plenty of interactive play keep its sharp mind satisfied. The fine, close-lying short coat is wonderfully easy, needing only the occasional wipe. Sharing Siamese genetics, it also shares the health profile: a tendency toward dental and respiratory issues, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, amyloidosis and a somewhat higher cancer risk. Buy from a breeder who screens their lines, note the breed's anesthetic sensitivity for your vet, and keep annual dental and cardiac checks throughout its long life.
