The Owl Finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii), or double-barred finch, is a tiny grassfinch from northern and eastern Australia, named for the black ring framing its white face that gives it a distinctly owl-like, spectacled look. One of the smallest finches kept, it weighs just 8-12 g and lives 5-8 years. Owl finches are gentle, sociable and peaceful, doing well in a planted mixed aviary with other calm finches, though they can be a little shyer and more delicate than zebra or society finches. They are enjoyed for their looks and soft contact calls rather than handling, and a bonded pair will busily build nests and explore together. Feed a fine finch seed mix and pellets with plenty of sprouted seed, egg food and small live foods, especially when breeding, plus greens, cuttlebone and clean water. Because of their small size they are sensitive to cold, damp and draughts, so a warm, sheltered, dry aviary or roomy flight cage is important. With gentle companions, a rich varied diet and stable warmth these little spectacled finches thrive and breed; chilling and stress are the main risks to such a tiny bird.
