The Scottish Fold is a sweet, calm, soft-voiced cat that adapts easily to family life and famously sits upright like a little person. Its charm, though, comes from a gene that must be understood before adopting: the same mutation that folds the ear cartilage affects cartilage throughout the body (osteochondrodysplasia), and every Fold carries some degree of it. Responsible breeders only pair a folded-ear cat with a straight-eared one, never Fold to Fold, which produces the most severely affected kittens. Because the joint disease can be painful, the single most important thing an owner can do is watch for early signs of arthritis — stiffness, reluctance to jump, a stiff or thickened tail, or a change in gait — and work with a vet on lifelong joint monitoring and pain management. Keep the cat lean, provide soft bedding and easy-access, low-sided litter trays, and avoid encouraging big jumps. Beyond the cartilage issue, the breed is also screened for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease, and the folded ears need regular checking and gentle cleaning. A Fold from a careful breeder, kept slim and monitored for joint comfort, can be a gentle and rewarding companion — but go in with eyes open about the health commitment.
