The Shire is the giant among giants — the breed holds the records for the world's tallest and largest horses, some approaching 20 hands and a tonne in weight. Developed in England as the ultimate heavy draft, it hauled brewers' drays, ploughs and barges, yet its temperament is famously mild, patient and gentle, earning it a reputation as one of the kindest of all horses. That calm, biddable nature makes Shires manageable despite their scale, but they are enormous animals that require serious space, robust fencing, oversized tack and knowledgeable feeding to grow and stay sound. They are willing, low-energy workers content with steady tasks and daily turnout. The abundant leg feathering must be kept clean and dry to ward off pastern dermatitis and chronic progressive lymphedema, and their great bulk stresses feet and joints — attentive farriery, laminitis prevention and arthritis monitoring are essential. Numbers fell to near-extinction after mechanisation, so today's Shires come from a limited gene pool; a health-focused breeder and a heavy-horse-savvy vet matter.
