The Toyger is a designer breed developed from Bengal and domestic lines to resemble a miniature tiger, complete with bold, rolling stripes and a big-cat strut. Behind the striking coat is an easygoing, good-natured cat: social, playful and notably intelligent, it takes readily to training and happily learns to fetch, walk on a leash and perform tricks, making it a rewarding companion for owners who enjoy interacting with their cat. It is affectionate and adaptable, fitting well into family homes. Active and clever, the Toyger needs daily interactive play, puzzle feeders and climbing space to stay content. The short, plush coat is very low-maintenance, needing only an occasional brush to keep its tiger markings sleek. As a young breed still being developed, its health is being watched, but from its Bengal heritage the main concern is heart disease — hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart murmurs — so buy from a breeder who cardiac-screens. Otherwise follow standard care: keep the cat lean, maintain dental hygiene, provide fresh water and keep up annual check-ups.
