The Turkish Van is a large, powerful and famously water-loving cat from the Lake Van region, and it lives at full throttle: energetic, athletic and independent, it explores every surface, climbs to the highest point and often genuinely enjoys splashing in water. It bonds strongly with its family but tends to show affection on its own terms — this is a busy, hands-on companion to admire in motion rather than a placid lap cat, and it needs plenty of space, sturdy climbing and active play. The semi-long, cashmere-soft coat has no woolly undercoat, so it resists matting and needs only a weekly brush, more during the seasonal molt. It suits an active home that can keep up with its energy. As a mostly-white breed, Vans with blue or odd eyes carry a raised risk of congenital deafness, so a good breeder will BAER-test and be open about it. Breeders also screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Keep this athletic cat lean and busy, maintain dental care, provide plenty of water, and monitor heart and kidney health as it ages.
