The American Bulldog is a strong, confident working breed that is deeply devoted and affectionate with its family, often gentle and patient with children it has grown up with. Naturally protective and territorial, it bonds closely and makes an alert, courageous guardian, so early and thorough socialization is important to raise a well-adjusted adult. Playful and energetic at home, it is far more athletic and active than the English Bulldog. This is a powerful, high-energy dog that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental engagement — brisk walks, running, fetch, tug and training satisfy both body and mind. An under-exercised American Bulldog can become bored, destructive and pushy. Intelligent and eager to please but strong-willed, it needs firm, fair, consistent leadership and positive, reward-based training from puppyhood, along with structure it can respect. The short coat is very easy to care for, needing only weekly brushing and wiping. As a large, athletic breed it can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid conditions such as entropion, and skin allergies, and some lines have breathing or neurological concerns, so health-tested parents matter. Given exercise, structure and affection, the American Bulldog is a loyal, capable and loving family dog.
