The Anatolian Shepherd is a powerful, ancient Turkish livestock guardian bred to protect flocks alone against wolves and thieves on the open steppe — and that independence is the essence of the breed. Calm, serene and confident, it is devoted to its family and stock but is fundamentally a working guardian that thinks for itself and makes its own decisions, rather than a biddable pet. It is strictly for experienced owners who can provide space, secure high fencing, early extensive socialisation and patient, respectful, positive training; it is territorial, wary of strangers, and barks and patrols, especially at night. It needs moderate daily exercise and, above all, a clear role. The short-to-medium double coat is fairly easy, needing weekly brushing, more during heavy seasonal moults. As a giant breed the Anatolian has a moderate lifespan of eleven to thirteen years and real risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips, guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating, and be aware of entropion (eyelid problems) and hypothyroidism. Note it can be sensitive to anaesthesia, so tell your vet. Give an Anatolian space, a job, thorough socialisation and experienced handling, and this serene professional guardian will be a devoted protector for eleven to thirteen years.
