Dendrobates tinctorius is a striking poison dart frog from the rainforests of the Guianas and northern Brazil. Reaching 4-5 cm, it is diurnal, confident, and long-lived at 10-15 years. Crucially, its potent skin toxins come entirely from a specialised wild diet of certain invertebrates, so captive-bred frogs are effectively non-toxic and harmless, and captive-bred stock is the only ethical choice. House them in a planted, bioactive terrarium with a drainage layer, live plants, leaf litter, and high humidity of 80-100 percent at a cool 22-26C, avoiding heat above the high twenties. Feed tiny prey, principally flightless fruit flies and springtails dusted with calcium and vitamins, several times weekly, which drives much of the daily care effort. A stable, humid, well-planted vivarium keeps them thriving, while poor nutrition or dryness causes decline. Their permeable skin makes them a hands-off display species, best appreciated for their bold colours and lively daytime behaviour.
