Ghost shrimp, also known as glass shrimp, are inexpensive, nearly transparent freshwater invertebrates prized both as active cleanup crew and as a fascinating window into crustacean anatomy, since you can watch their internal organs and food moving through their bodies. They are hardy and undemanding, tolerating a range of conditions around 68-80F, and spend their days scavenging uneaten food, algae, and detritus from the substrate and plants. Because they are so affordable, they are often sold as feeder shrimp, but they make genuinely interesting tank inhabitants in a peaceful setup with small, non-predatory fish that will not eat them. Provide plants, moss, and hiding places, especially since they are vulnerable right after molting. They will eat almost anything, from sinking pellets and algae wafers to blanched vegetables and biofilm. Though shorter-lived than fancier shrimp, a group of ghost shrimp offers constant, industrious activity for very little cost.
