Bred for hardy farm and pack work on steep ground, it pairs real strength with an exceptionally gentle, friendly and patient nature. Versatile and willing, Haflingers work under saddle and in harness, suit riders from children to adults, and are popular for driving, therapeutic riding, trekking and light farm work. Their calm minds and sociable temperament make them easy, rewarding partners that thrive on regular activity and turnout. The thick mane, tail and winter coat need regular grooming, and hoof, dental and vaccination routines are standard. Their great vulnerability is their thrifty mountain metabolism — Haflingers gain weight extremely easily and are highly prone to obesity, laminitis and metabolic syndrome, so tightly managed grazing, a forage-focused diet and consistent exercise are essential to a long, sound life.
