From the Perche region of France, the Percheron is a heavy draft with an unusual dash of Arabian blood in its history, which shows in its relatively clean (un-feathered) legs, refined head and surprising agility and stamina. Typically grey or black, it is intelligent, calm and adaptable, working readily under saddle and in harness and adjusting well to different handlers. Hardy and willing, Percherons are among the easier heavy breeds to keep and train, but they are still large, strong animals needing space, turnout and proper feeding. Their eagerness and steadiness make them popular for driving teams, forestry, riding and crossbreeding to add substance to sport horses. With little to no leg feathering they are lower-maintenance to groom than feathered drafts, though standard hoof, dental and vaccination care applies. As efficient 'easy keepers' they gain weight readily, so grazing and feed must be managed to prevent obesity and laminitis, and their working joints benefit from arthritis-aware conditioning as they age.
