The Society Finch (Lonchura striata domestica), known in Europe as the Bengalese finch, exists only in captivity — it was domesticated centuries ago in Asia from wild munias and has no wild form. Usually chocolate, fawn and white, it weighs just 13-17 g and lives 5-9 years, and is treasured as the calmest, most social finch there is. Societies are so easygoing and parental that breeders famously use them as foster parents to raise the chicks of shyer species. They live for company, must be kept in groups or at least pairs, and are hardy, quiet and undemanding, making them one of the best first birds for children and beginners — though, being flock birds, they are watched and enjoyed rather than handled. Feed a quality finch seed mix and finch pellets supplemented with sprouted seed, egg food, and small amounts of greens and vegetables, always with cuttlebone and fresh water. A long flight cage lets them fly properly, since finches need horizontal room more than height. Keep the group social, the cage clean and draught-free, and watch hens for chronic egg-laying and egg-binding; with company and good food these gentle little birds are cheerful, low-effort companions.
