The African dwarf frog is a fully aquatic amphibian that spends its entire life underwater, surfacing only to breathe air, which makes it a fascinating and peaceful addition to a calm community aquarium. Unlike African clawed frogs, which grow large and predatory, dwarf frogs stay under two inches, have webbed front feet, and coexist safely with small, non-aggressive fish in warm water around 75-82F. Because they are nearly blind and hunt by smell and touch, they struggle to compete with fast fish at feeding time, so they need targeted feeding of sinking foods like frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and specialized frog pellets, often placed directly in front of them. Keep the water calm, the tank securely lidded since they can escape, and the depth modest enough for easy surface trips. Kept in a small group, these gentle, quirky frogs display charming behaviors, including the occasional buoyant floating pose and males' soft humming calls.
