The dwarf or pea puffer is the smallest pufferfish in the world at barely an inch, yet it has the biggest personality of almost any nano fish, tracking movement outside the tank with independently swiveling eyes and recognizing its keeper. It is intelligent and endlessly engaging, but it is also feisty and best kept in a species-only tank, as it will nip the fins of slower fish and pester most tankmates. Crucially, dwarf puffers require a diet of live and frozen meaty foods, especially small snails, and their teeth grow continuously, so a steady supply of tiny snails to crunch prevents painful beak overgrowth. Provide a heavily planted tank around 77-82F with plenty of sightline-breaking cover to diffuse aggression if kept in a small group with more females than males. Demanding but enormously rewarding, the pea puffer is a favorite oddball for dedicated nano keepers.
