The American Wirehair arose as a spontaneous mutation on a New York farm and kept the healthy, level-headed temperament of its American Shorthair cousins. It is an undemanding, adaptable cat that enjoys company but is equally content to nap nearby while you work. Moderately playful, Wirehairs like a daily round of feather teasers or a ball to chase but rarely climb the curtains. Their curious, gentle nature makes them good with children and other pets, and a few window perches usually satisfy their need for entertainment. That distinctive wiry coat is low-maintenance and should not be over-brushed, as the crimped hairs are delicate; a gentle weekly groom and the occasional bath for oilier skin is enough. Screen for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, watch for skin sensitivity, and keep portions in check to avoid the weight gain this laid-back breed is prone to.
