The American Curl is instantly recognisable by its ears, which are born straight and curl backwards over the first days of life into their signature expression. Crucially — unlike some other structural mutations in cats — the Curl gene is not linked to skeletal or cartilage disease, so this is a healthy breed that simply looks distinctive. In personality it is a delight: a 'Peter Pan' cat that stays playful and kitten-like for years, affectionate, gentle, adaptable and fond of following its people around. The curled ears do need respectful handling: never bend or force them, and clean them gently, as the cartilage is firm and the ear can be more delicate than a normal cat's. The coat, which comes in short and semi-long varieties, is silky with little undercoat and needs only weekly brushing. Otherwise the American Curl is a robust, low-maintenance cat with no dramatic breed-specific disease. Follow the standard feline care — keep it at a healthy weight, maintain good dental hygiene, provide fresh water, handle the ears carefully, and keep up annual check-ups for a long, cheerful companionship.
