The Aegean is a natural breed from Greece's Cycladic islands, where it has lived alongside fishing communities for centuries. Almost always bi- or tri-colour on white, it is a smart, friendly, adaptable cat with a strong social streak and a fondness for people. Active and dexterous, Aegeans are famous for their skill around water — many will dip a paw into a fish tank or pond — and they enjoy interactive play, climbing and games that engage their quick minds. They tolerate other pets and children well and make lively, engaged family companions. The semi-long coat has little undercoat and needs only weekly brushing, a little more during moults. As a robust landrace the Aegean has no signature inherited disease; sensible care means watching the waistline, keeping teeth clean, and monitoring kidney health as the cat ages.
