The Abyssinian is a slender, endlessly curious cat that treats a home as vertical territory to be explored — you will find it on top of doors, on your shoulders and investigating anything new. It is people-oriented and playful rather than a placid lap cat, staying kitten-like in energy for years, so it thrives with an active household, another lively cat for company and plenty to climb and chase. Keep an Aby busy: tall cat trees, wall runs, fetch, puzzle toys and interactive sessions prevent the boredom that turns clever cats into mischief-makers. The short, ticked coat that gives the breed its glowing look needs only occasional brushing and is very easy to maintain. The breed does carry several inherited conditions to buy carefully around: progressive retinal atrophy (there is a DNA test for the rdAc form), pyruvate kinase deficiency (also DNA-testable), renal amyloidosis and patellar luxation, plus a tendency toward gingivitis and dental disease. Choose a breeder who tests for the genetic conditions, keep a good dental routine and monitor kidney health as the cat ages.
