The Australian Terrier was the first breed developed in Australia to be recognised internationally, put together in the nineteenth century from several British terriers to produce a small, hardy dog that could kill snakes and rodents, guard the homestead and tolerate heat and hard country. Everything about it is functional: a harsh weatherproof coat, short strong legs and a fearless temperament. As a companion it is affectionate, spirited and strongly attached to its own household, and it makes a very effective alarm dog for its size. It is more even-tempered and less frantic than some small terriers and adapts well to apartment living provided it gets real exercise and stimulation. The terrier package still applies: it will chase, dig and bark, and it can be assertive with unfamiliar dogs, so early socialisation and a secure garden matter. Exercise is around forty-five minutes to an hour daily, plus training and games; they are clever and enjoy learning tricks. The harsh double coat sheds little and needs a weekly brush and occasional hand-stripping, and should not be clipped short, which spoils the texture. Health is generally good. Buy from a breeder who screens for patellar luxation and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease of the hip, and be aware of skin allergies and of diabetes mellitus, which occurs in the breed at a higher rate than average. Keep up dental care and expect twelve to fifteen years.
