The Bedlington Terrier looks like a gentle lamb but carries a true terrier heart: affectionate, loyal and mild-mannered with its family, yet fast, brave and tenacious when its hunting instincts kick in. It is a devoted, playful companion that bonds closely with its people and is generally good with children, though it can be feisty with strange dogs and driven to chase small animals. Alert and quietly protective, it makes a surprisingly good watchdog. This is a moderately energetic breed that enjoys daily walks, play and the chance to run and explore in a secure area, but it is adaptable and settles calmly indoors afterward. Bedlingtons are intelligent and can be a little independent, so keep training positive, engaging and consistent, and socialize early to smooth their terrier edges around other pets. The distinctive curly, wool-like coat does not shed much and is often favored by allergy sufferers, but it needs regular brushing and professional trimming every few weeks to keep its shape. The breed's signature health concern is copper toxicosis, an inherited liver condition, so buying from tested lines is important; eye conditions, patellar luxation and kidney issues can also occur. Loved and well cared for, the Bedlington is a charming, devoted companion.
