The Balinese is a long-haired Siamese and shares that breed's soul entirely: vocal, brilliantly intelligent, athletic and intensely devoted to its people. It wants to be part of everything, chatters constantly about its day, and bonds so closely that it should not be left alone for long stretches — a companion cat or a home that is usually occupied suits it best. Graceful and busy, it stays playful for life and loves heights, fetch and puzzle games. Despite the long coat, grooming is easy because the Balinese has a fine, single-layer coat with no woolly undercoat, so it resists matting and a weekly brush keeps the silky fur and plumed tail in order. Sharing Siamese genetics, it also shares the health profile: a tendency toward respiratory and dental issues, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, amyloidosis and a somewhat higher cancer risk, plus the family's anesthetic sensitivity. Buy from a breeder who screens their lines, note the anesthesia point for your vet, and keep annual dental and cardiac checks throughout its long life.
