The Basenji is an ancient African hunting dog famous for two feline qualities: it doesn't bark (it yodels and chortles instead) and it fastidiously grooms itself clean like a cat. Intelligent, curious and deeply independent, it is affectionate with its family in its own aloof way but bores easily and is a determined escape artist with a strong prey drive and very selective hearing, so it needs a secure fenced yard, daily exercise, mental stimulation and patient, creative, positive training — obedience is not its strong suit. This is a clever, mischievous companion for owners who appreciate an independent, cat-like dog rather than an eager-to-please one. The short coat is wonderfully easy, needing only a weekly wipe, and it is a very clean, low-odour breed. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who does the breed's genetic testing: the Basenji is prone to Fanconi syndrome (a serious inherited kidney disease that has a DNA test and needs monitoring), progressive retinal atrophy and a hereditary anaemia (PK deficiency), as well as hypothyroidism and hip dysplasia. Choose a tested line, give a Basenji secure containment, exercise, mental challenge and patient training, and this unique, catlike hound will be a devoted companion for thirteen to fourteen years.
