The Basset Hound is a mellow, patient, friendly scent hound — a nose with a dog attached, moving through life at its own unhurried pace. Behind the famously mournful face is a gentle comedian that gets on wonderfully with children and other dogs and makes a relaxed housemate. But it is a hound first: driven by scent, it can be stubborn and single-minded on a trail, so recall is unreliable and patient, food-motivated training pays off. Its exercise needs are modest but real — daily walks matter to keep it fit and to burn its considerable appetite. The short coat is easy, but the long velvet ears and facial folds need regular cleaning. That low-slung, long-backed, heavy body drives its main health concerns: those drop ears are very prone to infection, and the breed is at high risk of obesity, which in turn strains the back and joints, so strict portion control is essential. Also watch for intervertebral disc disease (protect the back, discourage big jumps), bloat, and eyelid problems. Keep a Basset lean, clean its ears diligently, protect its back, guard against bloat with measured meals, and this easygoing hound will be a devoted companion for twelve to thirteen years.
