Boa constrictors range from Mexico through Central and South America, occupying rainforests, savannas, and semi-arid scrub. They are live-bearing snakes that commonly reach 2 to 3 meters and 10 to 25 kilograms, with females larger than males, and live 20 to 30 years. Their calm demeanor and manageable-if-large size have made them a staple of the reptile hobby for decades. House an adult in a large, secure enclosure of at least 1.8 meters in length with a sturdy hide and a water dish big enough to soak in. Maintain a warm side around 30-32C, a cool end in the mid 20s, and humidity of 55-65%. Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents or rabbits every one to three weeks, guarding against obesity. Support their full body weight when handling; well-socialized boas are typically relaxed and tolerant.
