The emerald tree boa lives high in the rainforest canopy of the Amazon basin across northern South America. It reaches about 1.5 to 1.8 meters and 1 to 1.7 kilograms, living 15 to 20 years. Equipped with unusually large front teeth for seizing birds and mammals from perches, it is a stunning but defensive species best kept as a display animal rather than a handling pet. House this arboreal boa in a tall, secure, well-planted enclosure with numerous horizontal perches. It requires high humidity of 60-80% with steady airflow to avoid respiratory disease and scale rot, a daytime ambient near 26-28C, a basking perch around 30C, and a night drop. Feed frozen-thawed rodents every two to four weeks using long tongs. Emerald tree boas can strike readily and deliver a memorable bite, so appreciate them primarily for their extraordinary appearance.
