Rosy boas are desert animals that need a dry 40–75 L terrarium with a warm basking zone of 29–32°C, a cool side around 24°C, and low humidity. Aspen or a sandy substrate suits their burrowing habit; provide two hides and only a small water bowl offered a few days a week to keep the air arid. No UVB is needed for this nocturnal species. Feed a single appropriately sized mouse every 7–10 days for growing animals and every 10–14 days for adults. Rosy boas are prone to obesity because they are so sedentary, so err on the side of smaller, less frequent meals and skip feeding during their natural winter slow-down. They are famously calm and rarely musk or strike, making them superb for nervous handlers; support the body and expect a slow, exploratory crawl. The main risks are respiratory infection from a too-cool or too-damp cage, retained shed if the animal has no rough rubbing surface, and scale rot from a wet floor. Keep them warm and dry and they routinely live past 20 years.
