The rosy boa is native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, sheltering among rocky outcrops and scrub. It is a small, stout boa, rarely exceeding 0.7 to 1 meter, and it is remarkably long-lived, often reaching 18 to 30 years. Its gentle temperament, tolerance of handling, and easy care make it a standout choice for first-time keepers. House a rosy boa in a secure 40-75 liter enclosure with a tight lid, since they are strong and persistent. Provide a warm side around 29-32C, a cool end in the low 20s, and low humidity of 30-50% to reflect their arid origins. Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice every seven to fourteen days, avoiding overfeeding. Rosy boas move slowly, rarely bite, and settle calmly in hand, making them one of the most pleasant snakes to handle.
