Kenyan sand boas want a dry 40 L terrarium with 8–12 cm of fine, diggable substrate such as play sand mixed with aspen, because they burrow almost constantly. Provide a warm buried zone of 32–35°C via an under-tank heater on one end, a cool side near 24°C, and a small water bowl. Humidity should stay low, and no UVB is required. Feed one appropriately sized mouse every 7–10 days for youngsters and every 10–14 days for adults, always with tongs — the boa strikes upward from the sand with surprising speed. Do not leave live prey unattended with a buried snake, and avoid feeding on loose sand that could be ingested; a feeding tub or a flat dish works well. Handling is calm and undramatic, though they may briefly musk; scoop from below rather than grabbing from above, which mimics a predator. Health problems are few: watch for scale rot if the substrate stays damp, respiratory infection in cool cages, and obesity from overfeeding this ambush hunter that burns almost no energy.
