The rubber boa ranges through the cooler regions of western North America, from coastal forests to mountain meadows, and is one of the most cold-tolerant boas in the world. It is small, usually 0.4 to 0.8 meters and very lightweight, yet exceptionally long-lived, sometimes reaching 30 years. Its famously placid nature means it almost never bites, even using its blunt tail to bluff predators while protecting its head. Unlike most pet snakes, the rubber boa prefers cooler conditions, with a warm side of only about 24-27C and a cool end in the high teens to low 20s; overheating is dangerous. Provide a secure 40-liter enclosure with diggable substrate and a hide. Keep humidity moderate near 40-60%. Feed small frozen-thawed mice every one to two weeks. These slow, gentle boas tolerate handling calmly but need a keeper mindful of their unusual temperature needs.
