The Kenyan sand boa comes from the sandy semi-deserts and dry grasslands of East Africa, where it ambushes prey from beneath the substrate. It is one of the smallest boas, with females reaching 0.5 to 0.9 meters and males far smaller, and it lives 15 to 20 years. Their fossorial lifestyle means they are more watched than handled, though they are gentle when picked up. Provide a secure enclosure of about 40-75 liters with several centimeters of loose, diggable substrate such as aspen. Offer a warm buried zone around 32-35C on one side and a cool end in the low 20s, keeping humidity low near 30-40%. Feed appropriately sized frozen-thawed mice every seven to fourteen days, offering prey with tongs to avoid substrate ingestion and impaction. These calm, hardy boas rarely bite and tolerate brief, gentle handling.
