The Boston Terrier is a friendly, dapper little 'American Gentleman' in a tuxedo coat — playful, adaptable and equally happy with a game or a nap, which makes it a favourite for city and apartment life. It is sociable with people, children and other pets, moderately energetic, and easy to train with kind, positive methods. Sturdy and low-fuss, it asks mainly for company and inclusion; it bonds closely and would rather be with you than anywhere else. The short, smooth coat is wonderfully easy, needing only a weekly brush. As a mildly brachycephalic (short-faced) breed, the Boston needs care in the heat — it can overheat and breathe hard, so keep it cool and avoid strenuous exercise in warm weather. Its prominent eyes are prone to injury and conditions like corneal ulcers and cataracts, so protect and monitor them. Also watch for patellar luxation and congenital deafness (which can be tested for in puppies). Keep a Boston cool, protect its eyes, keep it lean, and this cheerful, easy-going companion will delight you for eleven to thirteen years.
