The Chow Chow is a dignified, lion-maned ancient breed with a famously independent, almost cat-like temperament: clean, quiet, undemonstrative and deeply loyal to its own people while aloof and reserved with strangers. Affection from a Chow is earned, not freely given, and this is not a cuddly, eager-to-please dog. That independent, sometimes stubborn nature, combined with a strong guarding instinct, makes early, thorough socialisation and patient, respectful training essential — Chows do not respond to force, and an unsocialised one can be territorial or snappy. Its exercise needs are moderate. The thick double coat (rough or smooth) sheds heavily and needs regular brushing, several times a week and more during moults. Health-wise, buy from a breeder who screens hips, and be aware of the breed's tendencies: hip and elbow dysplasia, and especially eye problems from the deep-set eyes and heavy folds — entropion (in-rolling eyelids) is common and often needs surgery. Also watch for hypothyroidism and skin issues in the dense coat, and note the breed is heat-sensitive. Socialise it early, groom it regularly, keep it cool, keep up eye and joint care, and a Chow Chow will be a serene, devoted companion for eight to twelve years.
