The Bronze Corydoras (Corydoras aeneus) is the most widely kept corydoras in the world, found across a huge range in South America and reaching about 6 to 7 cm. It is sold in the wild bronze form and as albino and green line-bred variants. Like all corydoras it can breathe atmospheric air through its intestine, which is why healthy fish make regular quick trips to the surface. That is normal behaviour; constant surfacing combined with laboured breathing is not. Keep a group of six or more, and preferably more, in 80 litres or more at 22-26C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, over soft sand. Substrate matters more than anything else here: sharp gravel wears down the barbels they use to find food, and eroded barbels are one of the most common avoidable problems in the hobby. Feed sinking wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia, making sure food actually reaches the bottom rather than being taken mid-water. They are entirely peaceful, safe with anything that will not eat them, and spawn readily after a cool water change, laying eggs on the glass and plants.
