The common pleco (Pterygoplichthys or Hypostomus plecostomus) is a large suckermouth catfish from the rivers of tropical South America, especially the Amazon basin. Sold tiny as an 'algae eater,' it grows relentlessly to 30–50 cm and lives 10–15 years or more, quickly outgrowing the tanks it is marketed for. Its armoured body and rasping mouth are built for life on riverbeds and submerged wood. An adult common pleco realistically needs 340 litres or more, with very strong filtration to cope with its heavy waste output. Keep the water at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5, and always include driftwood, which it rasps for fibre and shelter. It is nocturnal, hiding by day and grazing at night, so provide caves and dim retreats. Despite its algae-eater reputation, the adult is a herbivore-leaning omnivore that needs algae wafers, blanched vegetables like courgette and spinach, and driftwood — it cannot survive on tank algae alone. Generally peaceful but territorial with its own kind, it may rasp the slime coat of flat-bodied fish. Watch for malnutrition, skin damage and ich; a huge, wood-filled tank and a proper vegetable diet keep it healthy.
