The Bullmastiff was bred as a gamekeeper's night guardian — to find and pin poachers silently — and it retains that calm, confident, immovable character: a massive, devoted family dog that guards by quiet presence and adores its people with equal weight. It is affectionate and gentle at home and only moderately active, needing regular but not extreme exercise. But its combination of great size, strength and natural protectiveness means early socialisation and firm, kind, consistent training are essential while it is still a manageable puppy; it can also be territorial with strange dogs. This is a breed best suited to a confident, experienced owner. The short coat is very easy, needing only a weekly brush, though expect some drool and clean the facial folds. As a large, mastiff-type breed the Bullmastiff has a short lifespan of around seven to nine years and real health risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows, guard strictly against bloat (measured meals from a raised bowl, rest after eating), and be aware of the breed's above-average cancer risk. Keep it lean and cool, socialise and train it early, provide confident leadership, and a Bullmastiff will be a calm, loyal guardian for its short, devoted life.
