The Cane Corso is a powerful Italian mastiff-type guardian descended from Roman war dogs — muscular, intelligent, watchful and deeply devoted to its family. This is emphatically a breed for experienced owners: it is naturally protective and territorial, and its combination of size, strength and guarding instinct means it absolutely requires early, extensive socialisation and firm, consistent, positive training to become the stable, controllable companion it should be. In the wrong hands, or under-managed, it is a serious liability, so the owner's commitment is everything. It needs substantial daily exercise and real mental work to stay balanced, and the short coat is easy, needing only a weekly brush. As a large breed the Corso has a moderate lifespan of around nine to twelve years and specific health risks: buy from a breeder who screens hips, guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating, and watch for eyelid problems (entropion/ectropion) and heart disease. Keep it lean, well-exercised and thoroughly trained and socialised, provide confident leadership, and a Cane Corso will be a magnificent, loyal guardian — for the right, experienced home.
