The celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus), also called the galaxy rasbora, is a tiny cyprinid discovered as recently as 2006 in small, spring-fed ponds near Hopong in Myanmar (Burma). It reaches only about 2 cm and lives 3–5 years. Its deep blue body is scattered with pearly spots, and its fins are barred in orange-red, most vivid in males. Being so small and initially shy, celestial pearl danios thrive in a densely planted tank of 40 litres or more kept in a group of eight or more. Recreate their cool, hard-water home at 20–26°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5, providing fine-leaved plants, mosses and gentle filtration. Ample cover coaxes out their colour and confidence. They are micro-omnivores needing small foods such as crushed flake, micro-pellets and live or frozen baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Peaceful and well suited to nano and shrimp tanks, they may squabble mildly among males but rarely trouble other fish. Sensitive to poor water, their main risks are ich and stress-related illness, prevented by a stable, mature, well-planted tank.
